I began my martial arts training in 1973 while growing up in Northern Virginia. At that time, my instructor was teaching a blend of Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. I continued my training through college as well as during my tenure with the U.S. Marines.

I became interested in the Filipino martial arts when one of my partners showed me how practical they were for law enforcement. From 1994 to 1997, I received training in the Filipino art of Derobio under Chief Chris Siangco. Chief Siangco was unable to continue teaching at that time so in 1997, I began training in JKD, Kali and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Roy Harris and Paul Vunak. I am currently an instructor in Mr. Harris’ International Grappling Association and a Full Instructor under Sifu Paul.

Just prior to this, I had the pleasure of meeting Guro Mike and began training under him during my quarterly temporary assignments to Quantico, Virginia. Guro Mike has been instrumental in my development both as a martial artist and as a law enforcement defensive tactics instructor. He is a true professional in every sense of the word and I am extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to train under him.
